What a successful day! Murang’a University of Technology (MUT) Mariira Campus hosted the inaugural MUTSO Fun Day held on Wednesday 5th March 2025. All the students participated wholesomely in the different sport and entertainment activities ranging from sports such as football, netball, volleyball, chess and modern dance. The Chief Guest Prof. Richard Juma, Registrar Academics, Research and Student Affairs was represented by the Director Mariira Campus, Prof. Benson Mwangi who officially launched and flagged of the the Fun Day. He was assisted by Prof. Dorothy Amwata, Dean School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences and Mr. Joseph Mwangi (MUT Sports Coordinator and Representative of the Dean of Students). The day was well-organized, allowing students the privilege to participate and compete in various sports, including indoor game, football, netball, volley ball and Tag of War. Winners across different categories walked away with substantial prizes and awards.
All the speakers of the day echoed the original idea behind organizing a fun day for the students. Mr. Joseph Mwangi expressed his willingness to take MUT sports a notch above and promised to include Mariira Students in the main university teams. Prof Amwata asked the students to use the event as a platform to showcase their talents. She recognised the importance of Fun Day and its associated benefits namely entertainment, competition, and leisure, they also have numerous physical, mental, and social benefits for individuals and society. On the other hand, Prof. Mwangi was happy with the organization of the event and urged students to participate satisfactorily.
Prof Mwangi promised that this event would take place every second semester of the year. The Fun Day began at 10.30 and ended at around 6.30 pm. The Magnificent tag-of-war marked the end of the event with Mariira staff emerging winners.
Football was won by 3rd-year students, whereas, 2nd-year ladies lead in leg ball, both were awarded a voucher worth Ksh 6,000 and Kshs 3,000 respectively. The winners of Volleyball men were the 2nd years, volleyball women were 3rd years, and netball the 2nd years. Each team received Ksh 3,000. Both students and staff members are looking forward to the next MUTSO FUN DAY to see what it holds. Many thanks to the MUT management for making the day a success.
On the other hand, Charity Cheboi and Patience Nyanumba shined in women’s chess and pool table competitions, respectively. Boniface Mwathi and Patrick Githika won the men’s in-door games and each was awarded a token of Ksh 600. In the dancing competition, the award of Kshs 500 was Patience Nyanumba while Collins Muriithi won the Chairand sitting challenge.
